Haha, in response to your "how stupid do people have to be to fall for this" ... remember that this scam only targets AOL users. That should answer your question as to why the scam is wildly successful. ;)
Well, yah... As a pretty strict rule, AOL users are dumb. Well, maybe not dumb, but definitely ignorant in the ways of computers, the internet, and sanity. Pretty close to dumb though.
