There's snow on the ground...
Yah, as much as I would have liked to sleep through it and pretend it didn't happen - it snowed today. Normally the first snow of the year doesn't really stick, but it did today. I used to like the winter, but then I got older. I used to be able to go outside and play in the snow, make snowforts, pelt annoying neighbor kids with snowballs, sled down hills, go ice skating.... the list goes on. Now winter is just an extended period of freakin cold weather where I have to bundle up all the time, freezing my butt off while my car warms up and accumulates a covering of salt from driving down the road. Or, in the case of the Camaro, I could just be driving and hit black ice, careen off the road at 60MPH and hit a tree. No thanks. Give me ice-free roads, a bright sun, warm air. Give me shorts and a T-shirt. Give me summer. I have no use for winter anymore.
I'm on the night shift again this week and so far it's been pretty uneventful. I set up a server yesterday for Zac... that's about the only non-boring thing that's happened. I updated my website a bit tonight. I could be working one of a couple of projects I'm involved with here at work, but my attention span is quite short from being so damn tired. There's a monster glass of Mountan Dew within an arms reach, and that's just about all that's keeping me awake right now.
One cool thing did happen today though... After literally years of unwavering patience (read: lack of money), I finally ordered myself a laptop today. I'm pumped. I can't wait for it to get here. Eventually I'll install Gentoo on it and join the Elite Liquid Web Gentoo Linux Laptop Club (ELWGLLC), but I'll probably just put Windows on it at the beginning until the novelty of having a laptop wears off. Then I'll install Gentoo and dual boot. It needs to get here soon, because I'm crazy patient like that.
I finally got the pictures of the Camaro developed that were taken after my spin out accident last month... They're in the Pictures section.
A NEW CAR!!
I must say that today was much cooler than the last. Instead of wrecking a car today, I got a lease on a new one! I wasn't really expecting to do the deal today, but things came together, and I got to drive it home! A brand new 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT. I'm pumped.
The IROC-Z dies...
Wow... total suckitude today. On my way to work today, I spun out on I-96 and wrecked my car. I'm fine though, luckily. The only thing I can figure is that I hit a patch of black ice and lost it. I was cruising in the right lane at 60-65 MPH, and I didn't see any slush or snow. The lane looked clear to me. All of a sudden, the car swerved to the right about 45 degrees, and I was headed into the ditch. There was a tree on the side of the road about 5-6" in diameter that I totally took out with my left front tire. I was sliding sideways when I hit the tree, so the car spun rather than going straight into it. I think that was the main reason I didn't get hurt. I hit my head a little on the window/door frame, but not nearly as bad as I would have if I hit the tree head on. The impact pushed my left front tire about a foot into the engine compartment, and suspension and linkages were all gone. The car is so old that there's no use in trying to fix it. So the towing company is going to bring it back here, I'll strip my stuff out of it, and then we're going to donate it to charity so we can get a tax writeoff.
It was kinds suprising though... Nobody stopped to help out. Asshole people... My cellphone got smashed when I hit the tree, so I wasn't able to call for help. I stood there for a couple minutes, and then realized there wasn't anything I could do, so I grabbed my boots out of the trunk, and started hoofing it towards M-59. I got about a quarter mile up the road when an ambulance came up behind me. They asked if I was all right, and I said I was fine, and they took me up to a gas station where I waited for the State Police guy. He showed up a couple minutes later, and he drove me back to the scene, and filled out his report. He didn't give me a ticket since my record was clean, which is really sweet.
After the tow truck showed up and loaded the car up, he took me back to the gas station so I could call my parents to come drag my ass home. I ended up waiting there for about an hour and a half. Blah.
Looks like my search for a new car begins much sooner and with more urgency than I would have liked...
Sheer stupidity
Yah, this might be the crappiest work week ever. On Monday and Tuesday our server host company decided it would be a good idea to move all of our servers to different racks and power supply units. Yes, All of them. more than 100 servers. So yah, the phones were going crazy then, and we answered them. People were pissed and for good reason. We were pissed too. Who in their right mind performs maintenance in the middle of the day, on a weekday?? We pay for their stupidity. Now we get a call today stating that a bunch of our servers will be down for a while because the new power supply system that they're on has a couple wires that are "glowing red" and that they need to disconnect some stuff to resolve the problem. Meanwhile in our secret underground bunker, the phones are ringing off the hook and we're not even answering them because we have nothing that we can really say. Thanks a lot [insert lame service provider company name here]! Thanks a million.
In addition to all the work BS, I had to buy a new tire for my car last night because the old one decided that it liked being flat. $105 for a tire I'll probably be driving on for less than two months. Great.
[Editors Note: The tire got about 3 weeks worth of use, as it took most of the impact when I wrecked the IROC...]
Work Rambling Boredom
Here I am, rambling from work. I've been so tired the past couple days. Perhaps I should start getting more than 5 hours of sleep every night. That would mean trying to go to bed at around 10pm. How lame.
I've been thinking over the past couple days that it's time to start looking into getting a new car. The Camaro is about ready to die, plus with all this high-gas-price BS, it's going to start taking me to the cleaners with all the driving I do nowadays. Likely candidates include either a Grand Am or Grand Prix. Any other ideas anyone?
Spinouts and Stomachaches
Wow... the last couple days have been somewhat eventful... During the big snow storm on thursday on my way home from work, I spun out in my car, almost went off an off ramp off the freeway, but after a couple of good fishtails, I was able to keep the car on the road, although I wound up pointing the wrong way... Kinda stunk, but hey, I'm still alive. Last night I got nice and sick, yay. Stupid flu! I'm still dealing with that today, although I'm not having any of the stomach problems I had yesterday. Thank god. Ok, back to watching football.
