Weekend Update

Monday, October 15 2007, 12:22 AM

First things first. The Star Wars Family Guy episode is absolutely freakin hilarious. It is, hands down, the best episode of Family Guy ever. EVER. Moving on...

This weekend has been an exercise in patience. It was the first weekend in a while where I didn't have some preexisting commitment, so I decided I'd try to get a few projects knocked out. I've been meaning to upgrade my Xen server here at home and make use of some of the half-height SCSI drives I mis-ordered a few months back. It turned into a much larger headache than I would have expected - mainly due to my stubbornness. I started the process of setting up the new environment in one of the machines Justin so graciously donated to the Mike Neir Hardware Fund a few months back. It's a nice server piece with a lot of space for drives, so it worked out well with the four SCSI drives I set up in RAID5. The problem lied in the fact that there were only four power leads coming out of the power supply. That meant no CD-ROM and no easy install. Sure, I could have put another power supply in the machine, but I was lazy yet determined to impose my will upon it, so I decided to make due without replacing the power supply. The machine gave me a good fight though. I ended up using cluster knoppix in terminal server mode to PXE boot the problem machine so I could copy the OS from my current Xen server to said problem machine. That worked, but I had a lot of trouble with the custom Xen kernel I had on the old app server. So, in the interests of laziness and getting everything working, I decided to uprade the whole thing from CentOS 4.4. to CentOS 5, which has a pretty and non-difficult Xen kernel right out of the box. Twelve hours after I started, I prevailed. I probably could have had everything working in less than an hour if I wasn't lazy and/or stubborn, but doing things the hard way always seems to yield more knowledge than the easy way. I'm a fan of learning and honing my skills, so it's all good.

After my difficulties with the Xen server, I performed the long-overdue task of cleaning out my fridge. I really need to get better at the task of managing left-overs methinks. There were some items in there that probably dated back to the first Clinton administration. After my cleaning task was complete, I put together a shopping list in the attempt to refill the fridge. I hadn't been shopping for more than anything but a gallon of milk or mountain dew in close to two months. I made a strong focus on acquiring a lot of raw materials instead of pre-made items since I've been experimenting a lot more with actually preparing food instead of just warming it up. I picked up just about every spice I've ever heard of, and the receipt reflected it. $276. Yeah. Two hundred and seventy-six dollars. Now I need to put the recipe book I have into action and make some tasty food.

Now I'm unhappy and less motivated to post. The Star Wars episode of Family guy displaced Metalocalypse, which isn't a good thing. Grumblefest.

Multimedia in the house!

This is going to be one link filled post. First off are the guitar clips I alluded to in the last posting. I did the clips kinda funky, so follow along. Note that all clips are just me, so it can get kinda boring in the places where there's no guitar. Also, I neglected to change the equalizer settings on the distortion pedal for recording, so the clips are really heavy on the bass and treble. It might be in your best interests to turn down your bass and treble on your player if you choose to listen.

First there's the whole thing (1:23:51, 102MB). This has all the bullshit in between songs, like me doodling, tuning, etc. If you're really really bored, you can listen to this. Next I've divided that huge ass clip into two parts, first clip (26:45, 31MB) is when I'm playing on the Carvin, tuned to C. I played a few Prong songs here, and did some goofing around towards the end. The second clip (57:02, 71MB) is me playing on the Strat, in a normal E tuning. I jammed to some of the old Megadeth and Metallica favorites here.

Those are the big chunks. Now, for those of you with shorter attention spans (read: everybody), here are the individual songs. First off were Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck (4:06, 4.7MB), Test (6:09, 7.2MB), and Whose Fist Is This Anyway (4:42, 5.6MB) by Prong. These are the songs played on the Carvin. Then I switched over to the Strat and played (in no particular order) Orion (8:00, 9.9MB), Ride The Lightning (6:34, 8.6MB), Master of Puppets (8:30, 12MB), One (7:06, 8.6MB), Sanitarium (6:24, 8MB), and Disposable Heroes (8:14, 11MB) by Metallica, and Symphony of Destruction (3:51, 4.7MB) by Megadeth. Yah, I didn't branch out very much here, what else is new.

Next are some more funny Family Guy clips that I've been meaning to post. They're hilarious! But what part of the family guy isn't hilarious? Here are the vids...

Six Million Dollar Man (6.7MB)

Gumbel-2-Gumbel (20MB)

Black to the Future (42MB)

Damnit, I did it again...

Tuesday, January 27 2004, 12:27 AM

Yup, fell asleep on the couch watching Family Guy again. I was supposed to do laundry tonight, but alas, it doesn't look like that was meant to be. Instead I slept, and then rummaged all over my room looking for a piece of paper with the PID for my Student Loan account with Uncle Sam, only to later find out that the information was saved in the form on my computer, rendering my 45 minutes of searching and frustration completely unnecessary. Fun.

For anybody that is cool and even for those that are not, there are two sweet concerts rolling around Southeast Michigan way in the coming months, and yours truely will definitely be there sacrificing my hearing up on the altair of sweet music in order to see them. Dream Theater is playing the State Theater in Detroit on March 22 and Iced Earth is playing Harpos on April 24. Dream Theater is touring by themselves and playing a two-set show with an intermission, so that should be crazy sweet. Not too many bands can play for that long, but they definitely can. I may be more pumped about the Iced Earth Show though... I've only seen them briefly in a live setting, at one of the Megadeth shows I caught in 2001 before Megadeth broke up. That's what got me interested in them, and it's all downhill from there... ;) It should be sweet to see them, and even cooler since they're headlining. I can't wait.

Rufus Griffin in ... BLACK TO THE FUTURE

Yes, I finally did it, I went out and bought the Family Guy DVD box sets, and I've been pretty worthless the past couple days watching it. Who cares... They rule! Non-PC humor is sweet!

I started back up on the day shift today, which is nice. The night shift is boring as hell. Downside is that I had to set the alarm for the first time in a while. Counfounded tool of evil! Oh well. I should be used to it by now. Doesn't mean I have to like it though!
