I fail at staying sick

Wednesday, December 13 2006, 4:00 AM

Today was the first time in at least a month where I played my guitar for more than about 5 minutes. I'm not sure why, but when I pick up the guitar, I just don't have much desire to play it. This is kinda backwards, because there's a few songs I've wanted to learn recently, and not wanting to play kinda throws a wrench in the machinery of that plan. Maybe I should record some more guiltar doodles. That might help me get motivated to play more. We'll see if the trends continue I guess.

I'm also feeling a lot better after my bout with the upper respiratory infection. I'm still coughing, but it's not nearly as consistent. It might just be some hypersensitivity in my throat, but it constantly feels like there's something tickling it, like animal hairs or something similar. It's really annoying, and the tickling only seems to go away when I drink something. Needless to say I've been drinking a lot of fluids over the past few days. Other than that though, I'm feeling a lot better. The condition seems to be making its way around work, so it seems that I was bound to get it sooner or later.

I fail at not being sick

Saturday, December 09 2006, 1:56 AM

Ugh... what seemed to be only the remnants of a cold has morphed into something much more annoying. After a couple days of worsening discomfort due to a swollen and irritated throat, I decided to get myself looked at. The doctor said I have an upper respiratory infection, and put me on antibiotics and told me to take motrin for the irritation. I was coughing a lot before the doctor visit, but it has done nothing but intensify since I've started taking the medication. It's taken a few solid hours to get to sleep each night, and I even had a coughing fit so violent last night that it caused me to throw up.

I love being sick.

I fail at posting

Monday, December 04 2006, 11:26 PM

Wow. It's been like three weeks since I posted last. I think I've had more than five people ask me if I'm going to post again, or whether I'm gong to close the website down. I'm not closing the website down. I've actually been somewhat busy, and things have been somewhat eventful. Combine those with a general lack of motivation for posting, and you get three weeks of inactivity.

Right now I feel like crap. I had some sort of illness late last week, and its remnants have firmly implanted themselves in my lungs, giving me one of my death coughs from hell. I had a splitting headache for most of the weekend because of it. Today my head doesn't hurt as bad since I'm not coughing as frequently. I am, however, coughing more violently, and it seems to be making my throat swell up. Every time I swallow, it feels like I'm trying to swallow a golf ball or something else similar in size. Ugh.

In another sucky occurence, one of my cats, Marshall, broke my good laptop. It's been broken before in a similar fashion, but this time it's really hosed. I had the laptop next to my bed on my makeshift nightstand, and he was sitting on the far side of it. He apparently felt the need to visit, and he tried climbing over the laptop. He planted a paw on the top of the screen and tried pushing on it, and it opened far more than my makeshift repairs would allow it to go, and the plastic around the hinges pretty much disintegrated. The laptop still works, but it's pretty much useless as a laptop though. This has allowed me to convert it into a more powerful and much more compact mythtv frontend than the full-sized machine I had before. I have it set up in a diskless network-boot conifguration, so it can sit right next to my center channel speaker and not be adversely affected. I've still got my old beast of a thinkpad that I acquired from Jon, but I'd sure like to get a new laptop. Perhaps I'll look around after Christmas.

I've got a few more things to talk about, but I feel like laying down for a bit right now. I'll try to touch upon them soon.

/me coughs

Sunday, November 21 2004, 10:05 PM

Here I am again, "overdue" for a post, but I really don't have all that much to say. Work has been ok for the most part, except for thursday. I had traded up Greg for the 4pm-12 shift since he had something to take care of that evening. When I came in Steven was pretty bent over some things, and the whole office was kinda grumpy. Crappy day I guess. One of the servers was acting up, and it was determined eventually that there was some faulty hardware. It had acted up before, so I thought it best that the old machine be retired in lieu of brand new hardware, just to make sure that the problems didn't continue. Building the new server went pretty quickly dispite the fact that the phones were ringing pretty regularly, but the data transfer certainly did not. It turns out that the main hard drive was the faulty part of the old system, and it caused the transfer to crawl. About 3 hours into it, I did the math, and projected that the transfer would take about 30 hours. Definitely not acceptable, so I decided to restore from the previous day's backups instead of trying to salvage the current data. Restoring the backup data still took a while, but it was a lot quicker than the original data. When my field triage was complete and I was ready to put the server back on the rack, I sat down to clean out the ARP cache of the core switch that server is plugged into, I noticed my monitoring system going haywire. I put the server back on the rack and took a peek at the monitoring server, and the main hard drive appeared to be dead. It was already like 5am at that point, and I didn't feel like dealing with anything else, so I just went home and fixed it on friday. The drive wasn't really dead, but it is certainly acting weird. I'll have to keep an eye on it. One cool thing happened thursday... I was able to fix my monitor, which had crapped out on me a few days previous. It turns out that it was just a couple of cracked solder leads leading out of the power plug to the rest of the circuitry in the monitor, and gobbing some more solder across the broken area fixed things up fine. I was kinda surprised at the reaction I got from the guys at work... they seemed super impressed at the fact I had fixed it, even though it was a very simple fix. It was a 10 minute job, and about 8 minutes of that was waiting for the soldering iron to heat up.

Thanks to a couple guys at work being sick, I've got another one of my coughs. They always do a pretty good job of making me miserable, and this one is no exception. My abdominal muscles get worked so hard when I cough that I probably do the equivalent work of two or three situps each time I cough. I should market this to all the smokers of the world... "Cough your way to fitness with Mike Neir! No longer do you have to waste your time with those OTHER workout plans! Now you can kill yourself and prolong your life at the same time!" Hmm... maybe not. They also give me wicked headaches when I have a good coughing spat; headaches that pain medications don't fix. I actially left work early on wednesday due to the headache that I had worked up. Sleeping doesn't work out too well either since whatever is in my lungs tends to shift around, causing endless coughing fits. And to think... this will probably only be going on for another two or three weeks. I can't wait.

Another cool thing happened this week I suppose... Half-Life 2 was released. It is officially the hottest game ever. Doom 3 is graphically stunning, and scares the shit out of me when I play it, but HL2 is a much more complete package overall. The graphic detail is stunning, but what may be even cooler than that is the physics engine. Things pretty much behave how they would in the real world, which isn't always easy to replicate in a game. Wood splinters and floats on water, rocks sink. and even more impressive, the human (and unhuman) forms in the game act and react realistically too. I had a few long gaming sessions this week and I was able to beat it on easy mode, where simply looking at the bad guys really hard seems to kill them. I'll play again on a harder skill level, and I'm sure I won't have as easy a time of it. For now, here is a screenshot of the game showing the game's female sidekick and some extras as well.

Half-way there...

Sunday, May 02 2004, 5:25 AM

Seven 3rd shifts down, six more to go. So far they haven't been all bad. I'm just sitting here with a headache, thanks to the cough deposited in my lungs by the remnants of last week's cold. What sucks is that I'll have this cough for another 2-3 weeks. Always happens that way. Which means I'll have a headache and a fucked up throat for said 2-3 weeks, because when I cough, I don't just cough, I COUGH. I cough like my lungs are trying to pass a cinder block through my windpipe. All of that strain gives me wicked headaches and makes my throat quite irritated, which in turn makes me cough more, which ..... you get the picture. Blah.

I started some stuff for the monitoring project last night and continued work today after I woke up. Most of it consisted of figuring out how event-based XML parsing in PHP works, and figuring out how to impliment that stuff into what I'm doing. Not too tough really, just a bit confusing at first. I'm just trying to set up some of the classes and functions that the program will use to do its thing. Things are moving, which is cool.

Sick and tired on midnights

Wednesday, April 28 2004, 9:56 PM

Yup, those words pretty much describe the last few days of my life. I'm on the midnight shift for two weeks, and I came down with a cold sometime monday. Blah. I was pretty miserable during the day yesterday, with a fever and a case of the shivers. I took some tylenol which seemed to help a lot. Today when I came home I went staight to bed and slept a solid 8 hours, and when I woke up all signs of the fever were gone. Looks like it broke some time during the day, which I have absolutely no problem with. I've still got a lot of congestion, a screwed up voice, and a bit of a headache, but I'm feeling a lot better.

Work has been pretty slow the past couple days, which is fine with me. Being sick and busy would just be a total pain in my ass. Being sick and not busy is much more bearable. Once my mind and body are well again, I'd like to start work on the new version of the monitoring stuff that I've been brainstorming for a long time. It probably wouldn't hurt for me to lay out a plan of attack, since the flow of the project will probably need to be kinda linear, with a few things happening first, and then other things building on that.

Damnit, I just looked out the front window and SNOW FLAKES WERE FALLING. IT'S ALMOST FREAKING MAY! I hate Michigan weather. It was 75 degrees out the other day.

Oh yah... Joe gave me his cold too. Freakin' grand.

Back to work

Friday, December 26 2003, 9:51 AM

After a short yet enjoyable break for Christmas, it's back to work. I'm tired as hell, and I'm still feeling crappy. I haven't got a good nights sleep in a long time, and combined with the sickness, I'm feeling pretty ragged. I'm skipping out on a holiday party I would otherwise love to go to in the pursuit of a good nights sleep. I need the rest. I worked 6-midnight last night, and was here at 8am this morning, so I didn't get crap for sleep. I'll probably pass out on my bed when I get home, which wouldn't be good for my plan of a good nights sleep.

Christmas treated me pretty well. My mom got my dad and I our own digital cameras, which rocks. I've been wanting one for a long time, but never got the impulse to buy one. Well, I have one now, and I'm sure that many captured images will find their way onto the site. [Ahem, look right... Joe caught me off guard while at work last night.] I also got a few DVDs, a DVD/VHS/CD shelf for the living room (needed one of those!), a few choice clothing items, and the usual stocking stuffers. [I'm probably forgetting something, I'll edit if I remember something.] The xmas dinner had to be cut short for me since I had to be at work at 6, but I have a plate of leftovers, so it's all good!

I shall curse your name!

Wednesday, December 24 2003, 1:21 AM

Well, only if you're name is Steven Collins or Joe Doss, because one of you guys got me sick by being sick at work. Actually, I probably won't curse you at all, since you're both cool, and didn't really mean to get me sick. So I take it back. Curses have been withdrawn. I'm not really all that sick either - just a head cold. The rest of my body feels fine and hopefully it'll stay that way. The tag-team of NyQuil and Day-Quil seems to be keeping a lot of the symptoms at bay, but my head is still congested as hell.

Work has been pretty slow over the past couple days due to the holidays, but we're cooking on new orders. Some of the guys have been using a live chat thing on our website to drum up new business, which is cool. It also means that we all have to use this thing, which sucks. Just another thing to add to the "you must pay attention to this at all times" list. Lame. We've got enough other stuff to occupy our time without having to answer 1000 questions about what version of Windows we offer on our servers (correct answer = NONE) or why their Front Page extensions don't work.... [/rant]

Speaking of the holidays.... from all of us here at mike.neir.org --- er, wait, it's just me, and my imaginary friend Gus --- have a Merry Christmas. May your time with family be well spent.

Star Trek Marthons rule

Sunday, January 05 2003, 9:44 PM

Captains log, stardate... hah, yah, I watched Star Trek TNG all day, way to go new TNN! Now just get rid of that wrestling feces and I'll be happy. I'm feeling a lot better than I was yesterday. Whatever I had must have been pretty weak in comparison to my Terminator white blood cells and antibodies. Sickness - Terminated. Hah, I'm so lame. Anyways, not much happened today, just a lot of lounging. Back to work tomorrow, yah. Fun.
