I had the camera out the other night, and snapped some pictures from the balcony. They turned out pretty cool I think.

Quick Update

Friday, May 02 2008, 11:15 PM

Touching on a few things from my last post...

Moving the bed to the other bedroom seems to have helped. I've slept pretty well the past few days. This is a good thing.

I was finally able to get the firmware on my RAID card updated. It only took about 5 hours worth of time, 5 wasted CD-ROMs, and a lot of annoyance. The result? The RAID array rebuilt itself for two days (pretty damn long for an array of that size), and the card promptly kernel panicked upon reaching 100% on the rebuild process. At least it didn't start over again like it had in the past.

I think I might need professional help. This morning, I built a small cardboard baffle (?) to direct air out of a HVAC duct towards the servers in my closet. People more sane than myself would probably say things like "you should have fewer computers", "why do you have so many computers?", or even the dreaded "you're freakin' weird!" I, however, build cardboard ducting.

I also caught this guy outside my window the other morning. I'm surprised the picture came out so clear... the window I took the picture through is dirty as hell.

Photographic Evidence

I can throw things with accuracy!

[snowball impacts]

Five throws, four hits in an area maybe four inches wide and eighteen inches tall from about 90 feet. Funny thing is that I was throwing off my porch while grilling up a steak, and there was no room for follow through, so it was all arm.

No More Vacation

Saturday, September 08 2007, 11:34 PM

Well, I'm back home. Boo. Vacations are never long enough, are they? I suppose not. The remaining few days of the trip were pretty uneventful. My dad and I finished replacing the rotten fence posts on thursday before the rains came. Other than that, my days were consumed with a lot of nothing. Perfect vacation activities.

I've got one more picture to post. It took a while to get. There were at least three hummingbirds cruising around the feeder while we were all eating lunch, but when I grabbed my camera, they mysteriously disappeared. I had the camera sitting on the tripod for a good twenty minutes before this guy showed up.

Days Lacking Labor

Thursday, September 06 2007, 1:04 AM

Partially because of the aforementioned relationship difficulties, I decided to take a vacation to help clear my head. I hadn't taken a vacation since before Jessica and I started dating (last October), so I was overdue. My parents have been taking their annual summer vacation around Labor Day for the past few years, so the timing was right.

My initial plan was to head out early on saturday, but that got pushed behind by a late night at work friday night. I ended up getting on the road around 1:30, and made pretty good time except for a twenty minute delay for a RV trailer that became forcibly seperated from the truck pulling it. It was totally smashed on the side of the road, and caused a pretty good delay. Once I was past that, my pace picked up again. I arrived around 5:30, about twenty minutes after my parents arrived. My cousin Carl, his friend Ryder, and Ryder's wife Missy were already here for the holiday. I was mildly surprised to see that my phone actually got service up here, and quite surprised to see that my phone internet service worked up here, which is allowing me to post this stuff in real time. Yay for technology!

The first few days were quite beautiful weather-wise, with sunny skies, temperatures in the 70s, and no wind or bugs to speak of. Yesterday (Tuesday) was cold and rainy, but nicer weather returned today. We've all been pretty lazy for the most part, which perfectly fits the general vacation motif. Today (Wednesday) involved some work of the sweaty and dirty variety. A couple wooden fence posts needed replacing, so my dad and I got to replacing them. We made quick work of the first post, but the second took a long while because it had a two foot diameter ring of concrete surrounding the base of the post about two feet deep in the ground. We ended up having to smash the crap out of it before we could lift the pieces out. What fun! That leaves three posts for tomorrow, weather permitting.

I've been taking a good amount of pictures during my trips up and down the beach, and I think I've got a few good ones. The first was actually taken inside. My cats discovered this guy before I did, and I think they pestered him for a while before I fought them off for picture taking.

This is a picture of bluicus flowerus, more commonly known as "a blue flower I saw on the beach." It's a cropped version of a much larger shot, but this is the best part.

I'll probably have some more pictures to post over the next few days. Stay tuned.

Gallery Update

Saturday, February 10 2007, 5:56 PM

Spurred on by my recent camera purchase, I decided to update my gallery and import all of the images I've been sitting on for the past year. I'm now running Gallery 2.1.2, which is a tad better than the 2.0beta version I was running previously. This one has a lot more nifty features, namely the RSS feed function. You'll probably notice that the "Gallery Updates" section on the sidebar has returned after its long hiatus. That's provided via RSS, and will update whenever I make updates to the gallery.

I've been taking random pictures pretty frequently with the new camera, and I'm still quite happy. I'm learning to use more of its features, which has made for a couple good pictures, and many bad ones. Here's one that I think turned out pretty well.

Power Shot

Friday, February 09 2007, 3:35 AM

Watch out world! I've got a working camera again! Technically my old camera (a Nikon Coolpix 3100) never stopped working, but it's become woefully inadequate over time. The battery door is broken, it runs through batteries in a heartbeat, and it's painfully slow. The battery-related issues are the worst though. It used to be able to take at least 150 pictures on a full battery charge, but now even new batteries only last for around 20-30 pictures or so. I'm not sure why.

Well, that's not a problem anymore. As of wednesday, I'm the happy owner of a Canon PowerShot SD600. Jessica picked up the same camera a short while ago, and she is quite enamored with it. I played around wth it a bit, and decided that it was time for me to upgrade. And an upgrade it is. I've taken at least 100 pictures on less than an hour's worth of charging of the battery. The camera takes less than a second to power up, and snaps pictures a ton faster than the old one. In short, I'm happy.

The only thing I'm not happy with is that my additional memory card hasn't arrived yet. I found a 2GB card for around $14, and ordered it along with a few spare batteries. The tracking information shows that the USPS recieved the shipping order on the 6th - the same day my camera shipped - yet it hasn't even been picked up yet. Grr. That means I have to suffer with the 16MB card that came with the camera and offload the images constantly.

Much of the pictures I've taken are of the same boring variety as the pictures I normally take. We'll see if that situation improves. This is the only one so far that I think is interesting...

I like my apartment

Sunday, June 25 2006, 6:45 PM

My apartment is a good place. It now has couches, and is comfortable. It's not too expensive. It's in a good spot, both in geographical location and in surroundings. Most of the shopping places and eateries I frequent are within a mile, and it's only about 10 miles from work. The coolest part might be that all of my windows overlook a nice unmaintained wooded lot with lots of birds and various other creatures, so I always have something natural and pristine too look at. A few examples:

[A Rabbit]

I saw this little guy this afternoon munching on grass next to the fence that seperates the apartment complex from the wooded lot. The picture kind of stinks because I took it through my bedroom window and the camera picked up a lot of glare. I tried slinking out on the balcony to take some pictures, but the little guy saw me and scampered away.

[Woods 01]

This is the view off my balcony looking southwest. Lots and lots of greenery as far as you can see.

[Woods 02]

This is looking northwest. I've seen a few deer down in the undergrowth near the fence, but my camera was never ready, so I couldn't grab any pictures.
