I like my apartment
My apartment is a good place. It now has couches, and is comfortable. It's not too expensive. It's in a good spot, both in geographical location and in surroundings. Most of the shopping places and eateries I frequent are within a mile, and it's only about 10 miles from work. The coolest part might be that all of my windows overlook a nice unmaintained wooded lot with lots of birds and various other creatures, so I always have something natural and pristine too look at. A few examples:
I saw this little guy this afternoon munching on grass next to the fence that seperates the apartment complex from the wooded lot. The picture kind of stinks because I took it through my bedroom window and the camera picked up a lot of glare. I tried slinking out on the balcony to take some pictures, but the little guy saw me and scampered away.
This is the view off my balcony looking southwest. Lots and lots of greenery as far as you can see.
This is looking northwest. I've seen a few deer down in the undergrowth near the fence, but my camera was never ready, so I couldn't grab any pictures.
Newfound comfort
My apartment is now much closer to being considered a normal living space. This past weekend, I picked up a couch and a loveseat that my uncle donated to my cause. They're maroon leather, and except for one worn cushion and a few nicks in the leather, they're in real good shape. My uncle smokes, so there's a bit of a smoky smell to them, but I think a good dose of febreeze will help with that. Besides, I can't complain much, as they were donated to me. They've been in my apartment around 30 hours, and I've already fallen asleep on them a few times. I guess I was catching up for lost not-having-couches time.
Now I need some speaker stands for my surround speakers, and a new TV. My grandmothers both have newer TVs than I do. How awesome is that?
Back to the old stomping grounds...
Yah, I suppose I'm overdue for a post now. I'm now moved into my apartment completely, with no roomates or other annoyances to speak of. It's great having my own place. I still need some furniture type stuff, like a couch, and some more shelves and things with drawers in them. Other than that though, I'm set. I've got the larger bedroom set up as the computer/guitar room, and the smaller bedroom is where I sleep. I figured I'd need less space to sleep than my computers and guitar setup take up, so that's the way the cards fell. I spent a few hours the other night running some cables from the living room to the computer room through the heat ducting so I could have sound and ethernet run between the two rooms without having wires all over the floor. It worked out pretty nice, but it was kind of a pain. I've got my guide cords in there though, so if I have to run anything again, it shouldn't be so hard.
My entertainment system leaves a lot to be desired though. My TV is old as hell, and literally takes about 5 minutes to fully turn on. Once it's on though, the picture is nice. I also am planning on getting a new receiver soon. I've got my eye on one, and I'm pretty sure I'll go out and get it this weekend with my holiday bonus. The TV will be next, but I can't say for certain when that will happen. I'd prefer to get a TV with a VGA input, but every TV with that feature that I've seen has been prohibatively expensive. Who knows... maybe I'll find a deal.
Other than that, it's been same old same old. Too much work, not enough play. I'm juggling three projects right now at work, which is certainly a pain. Everybody wants progress, but it's hard to do when you're being pulled in different ways. Once of the projects is reaching a good pause-point, so I'll be able to focus more on the other two once that's reached.
'Tis the season...
Yep, it's that time of year again. Christmas Eve is tomorrow (today?), and I'm burnt out. I've been working a lot, playing little, and according to the way I feel, not sleeping enough. It's all good though, for the time being at least. Tomorrow I will be able to visit with my mom's side of the family, and it will be fun and festive, as it always is. I guess that I'm lucky that I have a family that I enjoy being around. Not everyone is so lucky.
After Christmas though, that will be less fun - I'm moving, once again. My current living situation just hasn't worked out. I've never really felt at home here - more like I was just crashing at someone else's place every night. So, I'm moving on. I've secured a two-bedroom apartment in a complex where I've lived previously. It has a nice view of a large wooded lot, free of ugly things such as cars, buildings, roads, or reflections in the mirror. The price is pretty good too, so I can't complain. Not as good as sharing the bills with a roommate, but I'll take that hit in the name of living solo.
I get the keys on Monday, and I hope to have the bulk of my crap moved by late tuesday. It seems that my parents and I have become pretty good at moving me around, with the many MSU-related moves and all. They both have large vehicles now, so that should help things too, as long as I can keep their gaping maws fed with boxes and furniture and the like. (The vehicles, not my parents...) This should also allow me to move all the crap out of Greg's basement that is still around from when I lived there. I'm sure he and Carl will be pleased to see my junk go.
I won't have internet service until thursday at the earliest, so my online availibility might suffer. It's not like I talk to more than 5 people consistently online anyways... :)
Merry Christmas to all, and to all, I'm going to bed.
/me falls over
Yah, yah, I know... it's been like two weeks since I've posted. So save it! I've been really busy with my project at work, and it's finally coming to fruition. It's supposed to go live tomorrow. I know everything works, but I'm still worried that someone will find a glitch somewhere. I'm anxious for this project to be out of my hair for a while. Since it will be an evolving product, I don't think it will ever really be 'done', but at least I'll be able to get a break from it.
I need a vacation. My brain is mush right now, and I'm waking up tired every morning. I just need to recharge the batteries. I'm thinking about heading up north for at least a long weekend sometime soon. A few days of nothing but relaxation would be great for me.
It's also getting very close to the time where I have to make a decision on the 'where am I going to live' situation. The lease is up on August 1st, and we have to let the landlords know what our intentions are by July 1. Decisions decisions. I wanted to start looking for houses, but the uncertainty brought about by my eye and car situations make me want to play it safe for now and not get myself in trouble by jumping too soon. Each one has the potential of sucking tons of money out of my pocket in a fashion that's beyond my control.
We've reached our cruising altitude of 36,000 feet...
Yah, that's what life seems like right now... just kinda cruising, everything is the same day in and day out. I guess that's what I can look forward to in the adult working world. It'd be nice if there was something new that could occupy some of my time. Oh well.
I was (somewhat painfully) reminded yesterday of how bad I used to be at PHP/MySQL coding. I did some updates to my music stats project that I started like 4 years ago, and holy crap is the code ugly. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, because I didn't know the stuff. That's not to say that I'm "good" now, but I can certainly make things cleaner and more efficient than that. Oh well.
I had another one of those rare guitar moments today, the kind that make me want to keep playing and learning. I had already played my loud stuff right after I got off work, but I was bored, so I went down later on in the evening just to doodle. The distortion was all off and I was just walking little patterns up and down the higher strings, but it sounded really cool. I had the gain on the clean channel turned up more than usual, and that combined with the neck-bridge pickup combination just made the guitar sing. I really need to pick up a power dampener so I can turn up the gain more without making the rig so loud that it makes the furnace resonate. I can't imagine that the neighbors or my roommates like that too much. Oh well.
I uploaded some pictures of the new place today. There are some pictures of the place barely moved in, somewhat moved in, and totally moved in. They're not labelled, so you'll have to imagine where they are. Oh well.
I should have named this post "Oh Well".
My server just hit 200 days of uptime the other day and that's pretty neat... Oh the joys of having a box in a stable environment with no heat or power problems. It also helps that I have Linux running on there... there's no way a windows server would have lasted even 1/3 as long. Windows blows. Oh well?
Home sweet home
It's been a while since my latest "real" post, which is mostly because I've been in the process of moving to the new place and getting settled into it. Well, I'm moved and mostly settled in, and so far it's pretty sweet. My room is significantly smaller than the room at the other place, but that's no big deal. I'm good at compacting all of my belongings into a small area, so no worries there. The main portion of the house is pretty much set as well, but Greg and Carl are still moving their stuff into place.
Last weekend I was down in Indianapolis for another one of Andre's shindigs, and it was a blast. We went out on the town friday night for some debauchery, and then closed the night off with some Jimmy Johns. Jon and I were masters of beirut on saturday, playing 12 games and only losing 2. We were both in rare form, and it was great. We both paid for it the next day though. I felt like ass for most of the day, although not as bad as I felt as a result of the first indy trip, where I could barely sit upright without being nauseous.
I bought Doom 3 yesterday... I don't want to sound too much like a fanboy here, but the game is fucking sweet. The lighting is simply amazing, the graphics are crisp and lifelike, and overall the game is straight-up scary. I've caught myself hopping out of the chair a few times when some piece of evil sneaks up on me and starts attacking. Crazy shit. If you've got a decent computer, check this one out.

Moving to better quarters on campus...
Well, the residence/roommate situation has panned out. Greg and I have been approved for the townhouse, and we're due to move in starting next week. I'm pretty stoked. This place has a full basement, so I'll finally have some space to unleash some sonic fury on the guitar again. I've been trying to keep it as quiet as possible here since I'm on the second floor and not shielded by anything really solid. No more! Hah!
The new place should make things pretty hectic in the next couple weeks. I'm going up north this weekend for some (hopefully) sunny R&R, which will be immediately followed by two weeks on the midnight shift, coupled with moving into a new place and cleaning up the old one. Fun stuff. Oh well... moving about 5 miles sure as hell beats moving 65 miles. If we can acquire a van or some other large wheeled vehicle, I could probably move the majority of my stuff in one day. That will definitely not happen with the midnight shift in effect, but it could happen I suppose.
Other than that, I haven't been up to much. We've been a little light at work with Steven getting married and Joe going on vacation, so my project has gone on the back burner for the most part. Last weekend was Darin and Lisa's wedding, which was a great time. All the guys were in attendance, including Chris. We had a blast, and proved that it is indeed possible for 5 drunk guys to kill two large bags of pizza rolls and a DiGiorno pizza.
I got bored the other day and decided to install a couple of the included programs that came with my Audigy card. One seems like a full-fledged recording and mixing program, and the other is more geared towards making loops and stuff like that. I've only played with the latter, and I've yet to really figure it out. I did set up a couple of beats to play along to on the guitar though. It's a heck of a lot easier to improv when there's a steady beat to play along with. Whenever I would just play before, there was nothing but the (weak) beat in my head, and that changed quite frequently, and downright wandered away a good portion of the time. I'm going to try to figure out if I can record stuff against the beats. If it's possible, I'll try to post something here soon.
One quarter-century down...
Yah, I've been a tad busy over the past couple days - a trend that will probably continue for most of the month. I had two bachelor parties this weekend... Steven's party was friday night at the Peanut Barrel, and it was a lot of fun. Steven's quite the champ... He's not all that big, but he can certainly hang in with the big boys in the drinkin department. Pictures are up in the gallery, i.e. here. Saturday was Jon's party. It was a lot of fun, with a football game in the baking summer sun, and lots of drinking and good times. No more details will be disclosed to protect the (not-so) innocent. I had initially made plans to hang out at LaRouche-land on sunday for the 4th, but the weather wasn't so swell that day, so I just ended up staying over at my parents place and recuperating. I was pooped. Oh, I guess I turned 25 on saturday too. Wheee.
Over the past couple of days I've been looking for new places to live. The lease on the current place runs out on the 31st, and Joe couldn't commit to being in the same spot for another 12 months, so we're parting roommate company. I may end up getting a place with another guy from work, Greg. He showed me a townhouse that he spied the other day, and it's pretty nice. Lots of space, not too expensive when it's all said and done, and it's a lot closer to work than where I'm at now, which is good for my car.
Relocation
Well, this post is a week overdue, but I've moved! I'm now back in East Lansing and living with one of the guys I work with. The place is quite sweet, and very roomy. If I know you and you're cool, stop on by and hang out.
