Shedding the FAT

Thursday, May 04 2006, 7:18 PM

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but I kept forgetting. Well, I remember now. A few weeks ago I stumbled across a native Windows driver for ext2/ext3 filesystems. This is awesome for people that dual-boot between Linux and Windows. Previously, you'd have to create a partition that both operating systems could fully access if you wanted to share data between both environments. Normally this meant setting up FAT32, which is a pretty crappy file system in many ways. It's also possible to use NTFS, but Linux support for it is still experimental, which doesn't make it a very good choice. Ext2 and ext3 are solid filesystems with no major pitfalls.

This good news for me since I have a Windows XP/Gentoo dual boot setup on my laptop. I had the previously described FAT32 shared partition, and it was a drag for me. For whatever reason, whenever I would try and use rsync to synchronize my files between laptop and my file server, I'd have to tell rsync to completely scan each file for changes, rather than use some of the filesystem timestamps. Otherwise, it would copy files it didn't need to copy. This made the synchronization process take a very long time, especially when synchronizing my music archive or digital camera photo collections. Now I don't have that problem!

I can't vouch for it's stability yet, becuase I really don't use Windows on my laptop that much. I'll post something here if I have any issues.

Shorn

Wednesday, March 29 2006, 11:51 PM

Ooops, I've done it again. In a decision that I'm 100% certain my mom and sister will hate, but one that I'm quite fine with, I buzzed off a full head of hair yesterday. I had the "man of the mountain" look going on again, and I was tired of wearing a hat everyday, so I got out the clippers and trimmed everything down to 1/4". Nice easy maintenance there. Since I have no idea how much I'll be spending on eye procedures and medications this year and finances are kind of tight, I see this as a smart financial decision. Cutting my own hair saves cash. Save all the money you can, right? Time to start buying ramen noodles by the truckload, too.

Also, in completely unrelated news, getting a solid IPSec configuration working in Windows is a total pain in the ass. I've been using IPSec in Linux both at home and at work for almost two years now, and it's rock solid and easy to configure. In my experience, on the other hand, Windows only works properly for a matter of hours, and then requires intervention. If anyone out there knows why the Windows IPSec implementation likes to crap out for 5 minutes once the ISAKMP lifetime has been reached, and more importantly, knows how to fix it, please let me know. I suppose Windows could just be taking a break for a cigarette, but Windows should know better than that. Smoking stinks.

Ignorance...

Sunday, May 16 2004, 9:22 PM

Wow... my cousin Steve is pretty ignorant...

(21:17:03) Steve : windows is beter than linux

All of this because he went to a trade school that educated him in Windows administration... Here... I'll open up the discussion to things Windows is better at.

Windows is better than linux at:

1. propogating worms and viruses

2. wasting SysAdmin's time dealing with said outbraks and other security vulnerabilities

Who else wants to continue?

Samba problems

Saturday, May 15 2004, 4:37 PM

In my continuing project to segregate my wired and wireless LANs, I came across an error when connecting a windows box on the wireless subnet to my samba box on the wired subnet... Windows and samba were talking, but not agreeing... The following netbios error showed up in ethereal, which didn't help much at first: "not listening for called name". I poked around, and found nothing, and then remembered that I had my samba configuration set to only allow access from 192.168.0.x, my wired lan. Changing that access list fixed the problem, so there ya go.

Take two...

Sunday, April 04 2004, 10:13 PM

Ok, I'm going to try to get this post written again. I'm in linux, and Galeon is much cooler than IE, so hopefully all will go well.

Last weekend was pretty good for the most part. I worked saturday morning to help fill in for Mike being on vacation. He was on vacation, so there was a nice hole there. I got 8 hours of OT, so it didn't bother me to fill in. I stayed pretty busy, which is good. Being bored and by yourself is a drag. Servers are cool, but they aren't really good for company. After work, I went over to my parents place to visit. It's kind of funny... the past few times I've gone there, I spend most of the time there just watching TV. Perhaps it's because my dad has a satellite dish and he actually gets good channels, or perhaps it's because there isn't as much to keep me busy there. It's always good to visit though. I know everybody is happy to see each other, so it's cool. Plus I always get a home-cooked meal. I never bother cooking here, so it's always a treat.

Monday and tuesday were pretty busy at work, much to the shagrin of Steven, Phil and myself. Everyone at work knows about us being short on mondays and tuesdays, so hopefully the situation will improve. Being shorthanded on the two busiest days fo the week is definitely not acceptable.

Wednesday wasn't so bad at work, and the evening was even cooler. We just hired a new guy at work, and some people at his previous employer were giving him a sendoff at Crunchy's. Well, Steven and Phil are also refugees from said company and both worked with the new guy, so they invited themselves to the gathering. They thought it would also be cool if a bunch of the Liquid Web guys showed up too, and well, we did. We had most of the crew there, and it was pretty insane. Matthew was in rare form, and really wasn't letting anybody go without a beer in front of them. Each of us had 3 big Doppelbachs (by Bells I think), and rumor has it that the beer was around 10% alcohol by volume. Judging by how drunk everybody got, I really wouldn't doubt it. Nobody was really planning on getting that hammered, but sometimes the best of intentions lead to nothing.

The previous nights drinking took a pretty big toll on Joe and I thursday morning. I was a wreck, and actually had to lay down for a little while because I was feeling so crappy. Joe wasn't as bad off, but he still wasn't feeling that great. I think it was around 1 or 2 pm before I felt decent.

Friday was pretty slow at work, and pretty uneventful in general. Didn't really do anything.

Yesterday I hung out with Steve most of the day. He had brought up a hard drive to get some files I had backed up for him when the previous hard drive he had went south. His girlfriend was at work all day, so he just chilled over here. Pretty tame. I was pretty pissed though... around noon it was really warm and beautiful outside, but around 8pm, there was a friggin layer of snow on the gournd, and it was cold outside. I would have slapped the person responsible if such a person existed, but instead I'll just curse mother nature... Damn you mother nature! Let it be warm!

Today, Joe and I spent a ton of money at the grocery store. Over $200 in total. Crazy. Other than that, I was pretty unproductive other than making some updates to the website. I should have done my laundry today, and probably could have cleaned up a bit around the apartment, but hey, no biggie. Daylight savings also hit last night, so set your clocks!

Yah, so this post wasn't as long as the original, but Take two has been written. Enjoy!

Damn you Internet Explorer!

Friday, April 02 2004, 8:14 PM

Damnit, I just had a ton of stuff written for a post, and IE fuckin ate it. I boot into Windows to play a game, and think, it's cool, IE can handle my log post, it'll be fine. Apparently not. You'll get your log post, but you'll get it later, and with Penguin Power. I'm not typing all that crap up again right now! Grr!

We want the funk, gotta have that funk....

Saturday, February 28 2004, 9:48 PM

Hmmm... Last few days at work have been pretty calm, which is pretty cool. Everybody's been in and doing their thing, so the workload has been light. Works for me. Chris was doing some upgrades on MRTG on one of our monitoring servers, and broke one of the setups that I had made to log activity on the servers. It wasn't really a big deal since I made something new and better to replace it. Well, I am in the process of making something to replace it. The prototype works pretty well, but is kind of inflexible in its current state. I've been meaning to finish making it, but I kinda lost motivation. Well, when Chris broke MRTG, I had some motivation to start development again, so I'll probably doing that over the coming weeks.

Speaking of development... I really have to ask what combination of drugs the Microsoft developers were on when they wrote the code that displayed the message below. I saw this when I was trying to listen to some guitar clips I recorded in windows media player... Strange shit. I guess shouldn't have cut the blue wire when trying to disarm that bomb the other day...

stupid error

I've got some more guitar clips up for the three people who would actually care... They're kindy funky in nature, and sound pretty cool with the guitar upgrades. The combination of the low B string and the new pickup configuration makes for a really cool sound, almost like a bass, and when I pick the strings hard, it yields a sound similar to a slap/pop sound on a bass. Sounds really cool.

Clip 2: Funky 2

Mike vs. Responsibility... MIKE WINS - FATALITY

Sunday, February 08 2004, 1:39 PM

Yah, that was yesterday. I passed out on the couch friday night really early... probably around 9:30, after some dinner and a few beers with Joe Doss, so my ass was up really early yesterday morning. I woke up first at about 5:30, but was like "hell no!" and went back to sleep until 8:30 or so. I had planned on being responsible and getting some stuff done like laundry and grocery shopping, but Joe stayed at his parents place after his night shift, so I went all out. I ended up cleaning my room and the rest of the apartment, vacuuming the whole place, cleaning up the kitchen, doing my laundry, bought groceries, and got a soldering iron. I needed the soldering iron to fix my computer subwoofer and pedalboard. The subwoofer had cracked solder leads on the signal plugs, so when the sub was hitting hard the right speaker would just cut out due to the poor connection. So I fixed that. One of the power cables on the pedal board needed some work because I kicked it one night after coming back from the bar, and I busted one of the plugs, which needed to be replaced. Pretty easy once I had the tools. All in all, a very productive day.

Once I was done being mister fix-it, I set down to converting my workstation over to fluxbox like I'd done on my laptop. I guess it's a testament to what a Linux dork I've become... I'm totally gravitating to the minimalist kind of interfaces. Kinda funny, because about a year ago I was still Mr. Windows with a few linux servers for file and web serving, but now I'm Mr. Linux with one dedicated Windows box and Windows install on my laptop that I only really use for games. Kinda funny. I've been getting quite a few people looking at my resume searching for people with experience with some of the Compuware products listed there and MS SQL server, and I've even got a couple people asking if I'd be interested in jobs in those areas. They'd probably pay better, but I'm really not interested in touching that stuff anymore. Viva la Linux!

The beginning of the end for Microsoft?

Sunday, December 28 2003, 1:54 PM

I just caught this link off of Slashdot - it's an article about how Microsoft's domination in the software market may be coming to an end, and why. The reason - Linux, because it's free! Also because it's a helluva lot more secure than Windows. Also, when something is found to be broken, there is normally a patch to fix it within a day or two. Not always the case for Windows.

Anyway, here's the link: The Inquirer

Yes, I should really stop taking naps on the couch...

Friday, December 12 2003, 3:57 AM

Yes, the time is right, it's damn near 4am, and I'm still awake thanks to a nap on the couch. Yes, I do have to work tomorrow, and yes, I may just pull an all nighter and sleep when I get home. It's been done before. I did that for a month or so my 4th year at MSU... got all turned around by some programming projects, and then just kept it going. Stayed up all night doing homework or reading or whatever, then went to class, then slept the afternoons away, and woke up sometime in the late afternoon-early evening. Worked pretty well actually. I don't want to start it up again though... it would probably lead to less of a social life than I already have!

I got a random stroke of ambition over the past couple days and decided to make my XMMS logger plugin work properly by logging ID3 tags instead of whatever is displayed in the playlist window. It took some work, but with some help from Ben I prevailed. There were some hurdles (my total rustyness with C being the largest), but it the thing finally seems to be working right. Chalk up another victory in the move away from Windows! I don't think I'll ever ditch Windows as long as I still play games, but the number of things I do in Windows that can't be done in linux is getting pretty small. Playing games, syncing my cellphone, and... hmmm... I'm sure there are more, but I can't remember now. It's late.
